Environmental Directives

January 2003, the European Union (EU) adopted two environmental directives, RoHS and WEEE, to contribute to the protection of human health and environmentally sound recovery and disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.

RoHS stands for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances and bans the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in electronical and electronic products. This directive was initiated July 1, 2006.

The WEEE directive, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, concentrates on the recyclability of electrical and electronic products, and states that, from 13 August 2005 onwards, manufacturers are required to finance the collection, treatment and recycling and recovery of all WEEE sold under their brand.

The RoHS and WEEE directives significantly impact the design and manufacture of electrical and electronic products. It is Flextronics’ policy to

  • Adopt a progressive position to ensure that Flextronics clearly complies with any legal obligations the company has
  • Ensure that we can appropriately support Flextronics' customers in their desire to do the same
  • Realize whatever opportunities these directives may present in adding to our competitive competencies portfolio
  • Execute these in the most cost-effective manner possible

Environmental Leadership

Flextronics' staff has many years of experience in green manufacturing and recycling. Flextronics' lead-free soldering initiative, for example, goes back to 1995. Since then the company has made significant contributions to the field of lead-free solder, in design, implementation and leadership. Since 1997, Flextronics has introduced multiple products (including printers, mobile phones etc.) for a number of leading branded technology companies using lead-free solder.

2002, Dr. Dongkai Shangguan, Director of Advanced Process Technology, Flextronics was awarded the Soldertec Lead-free Solder Award in appreciation of his long-term involvement in lead-free research and implementation. He also coordinates the EMS forum on Pb-free PCB assembly, which Flextronics initiated with other EMS companies.

Industry Consortia

Beside its membership role in the Soldertec organization, Flextronics is also involved with different industry associations such as IPC (Association Connecting Electronics Industries) and HDPUG, the High Density Packaging Users Group.

Furthermore, the company has been actively working on lead-free technology with universities including Tempere University of Technology in Finland, Swedish Institute for Metals Research, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and Göteborg (Sweden) Chalmers University of Technology.
